Cat's Culinary Catastrophe (2D Animation)

Overview

Cat's Culinary Catastrophe was made for a University assignment; I was tasked to create a 2D animated story for children. The story I came up with is about a farmer who has different ideas for meals throughout the seasons, but keeps bumping into issues each time as their friends have to help out!

My second main character concept featured a clumbsy cat protaganist in a vibrant pastel-brushed world. I enjoyed this idea and stuck with it!
My first main character concept was a more generic farmer character in a pixel art style.

Tools used

  • Davinci Resolve (Video Editing, Animating camera + character limbs)
  • Photoshop (Storyboarding, character sprites + backgrounds)

My Role

As this was a solo assigment, I was responsible for creating:

  • A storyboard and the final animation.
  • Animating the characters, which was done by creating a 'spritesheet' of each body part and combining them in Resolve.

Reflection

I was really happy with the animation both as a personal project and academically. It got an A or 70/100 grade and was also something I hadn't done before - 2D animation - which boosted my confidence in trying new projects I hadn't done before.

I didn't get the full story I storyboarded done. This was somewhat disheartening but it reminded me that my time management skills needed work as I had spent a large portion of my limited time working on only the first season/quarter of the story.
